Day Five

I’ve now had 200 million units of interferon dripped into my bloodstream and, so far, I’ve avoided most of its notorious side-effects. That’s an answer to prayer. The interferon is a genetically engineered drug that is supposed to supercharge the T cells (specialized white blood cells) in my body so they can do a better job of identifying and destroying any cancer cells that may be present. Unlike chemotherapy, which directly poisons all rapidly dividing cells in the body (most notably cancer), immunotherapy works indirectly through the immune system, and lets the body’s natural defenses do the work.

So it appears the INF has given those T cells a kick in the butt without kicking mine too badly. I’m fortunate to have come through this first week in such good shape. As of this moment, I have a slight headache but no other symptoms. Now I get a break for the weekend, and then resume treatments on Monday. Thanks for visiting this blog. I appreciate all the comments that have been posted. I’m not sure how long I can sustain this level of dialogue, but it’s been a lifeline this first week.

I knew you were long in the tooth, but that's ridiculous. Enjoy the weekend and your time off from interferon--

Just sat down and read your blog- start to finish. Your blog is my initiation into the blogsphere. I'll probably be spoiled for future blogs as yours sets the bar pretty high. We love you all and will continue our prayers.

Peter, so glad the first week went so well and pray this next week goes even better. On a mundane note, hope the garden survived the hail and snow though it must have been a dramatic sight to behold this time of year. Carl

Peter, we are happy you are feeling as well as you are.
I have had two friends go through this and both felt better than they had expected too. A blessing!
Hope this week goes as well for you.
That pic is scary stuff, I just scare myself by looking in the mirror in the morning. LMAO
Keep the faith.

Ahh, good to see the week ended up well. It must me the beans. Given the photos, it looks like you may be eating more carrots too. Our radiologists would like to have you here for awhile as Medicare reimbursement is decreasing and the volume of services could help us out. My prayers continue. Was also thinking of you yesterday at the top of Mt. Diablo. You would have liked the terrestial wind. Keep up the fight. All my best, Davey Me Boy

Peter, Thanks for sharing your journey with us. We miss you at Options but know that as God provides you with His grace and strength He’ll provide us with leadership and vision while you are away.
Your observations on worrying - “worry is a failure of the imagination” struck a chord. It does boil down to two options – trust God or not to trust. So much easier said than done. Thanks for trusting Him. You are in our prayers. Keith L.
